Ex Clerk here.  I became an ex-clerk when I passed the California Bar in November of 1988.

Now  I am not  a great writer. And  I am not a punctuation freak nor do I spell very well . But after placing an ad to find a legal assistant I was stampeded by hungry Loyola law students seeking a “position“  with my "firm”.

·         Attention Laws Students. Summer is here and so now time to grab those cushy summer internships. Trust me; you will never have it so good again in you life. Get to work. If the poor communication skills of those who responded to my ad are reprewsentativre of the larger population of law students then I am compelled to counsel most of you thsat you need some serious tune up in your communications skills.

Recently my criminal defense practice reached the size where I needed   to hire an assistant. Therefore, I hired two. One I located through the Loyola Law School placement Office. When I submitted my ad I cautioned applicants that I did not know how long the job might last (due to economic constraints), and that I was a sole practioner in criminal law. With lap tops at the ready the entire eager and oh too competitive  student body presented themselves at my e-mail portal  I trolled the waters of Loyola hoping to find a sharp-as-tacks, highly literate and intelligent assistant. And I did.  But, I must say for most of you who applied your cover letters were vacuous and pedestrian aned contained nothing to convey any idea of who you are. 

 So I will take some time here to school you on the fine art of the narrative, the story. It has to tell something about someone or some place or something. In your case it needs to tell the prospective employer who you are organically rather than display a robot like rigidity stating sterile conclusions but communication nothing.
